Pre-production

Throughout the pre-production stage of my project's development, we used a variety of technologies to plan our sequence in detail.

In the beginning of the project we not only practiced our technical skills by using different hardware, like the BackMagic camera and the Vinten tripod during the camera workshops, but also various softwares and online platforms. For instance, on our editing workshops we were learning how Adobe Premier (software) operates. However, the most significant part, in my opinion, was using different websites, online platforms, like Youtube as a part of our independent research and planning.

To visualise all of our ideas, I used Canva (an internet-based platform) to create mood boards and character/costume lists. I found it quite useful, because, even though we agreed on certain ideas verbally, we found that our expectations and personal interpretations differed a lot from what we then created using Canva. This undoubtedly helped us understand each other's views and, therefore, continue developing the sequence in a direction every team member agreed with. Moreover, I initially used "storyboardthat.com" to create a draft of the storyboard for our title sequence. Being honest, I didn't find myself being productive and working effectively when using this platform to visualise all the shots for "A Void". Even though, it provided various tools, images etc., I had certain ideas in my mind, which could not be implemented accurately using online templates. Thus, I developed the storyboard using pen and paper at the end. Google documents were also very handy, as I designed all of the planning tables (shoot day, cast, etc.) there: the platform is easy-to-use and saves the work automatically (unlike Word) which is useful for people like me, who always forget to lick "save" after writing something up. As I already mentioned, diverse research was completed before the shoot day. For example, I used Youtube to watch psychological thriller title sequences and gather inspiration for my project. I also visited different websites of Film Institutions, such as Belstone Pictures and Universal Pictures to analyse my product from a distribution and marketing point of view (+see how small and large scale film companies distribute media).

Talking about hardware and software in more detail, it is important to mention the significance of such technologies like iPhones and MacBook Pro computers we used to reach all the online platforms and softwares. I was working on my laptop throughout the whole pre-production stage and was introduced to operating on an iMac during our editing workshops. Mentioning those, I also learned how to use an editing software called Adobe Premiere during our workshops (as a preparation for post-production). Before, I only knew how to edit videos in Video Editor Plus Movavi, which I used earlier to create the test shoot video posted on my blog.
